Emphasizing the potential positive impact on the environment and the reduction of risk from mail fraud and identity theft, Wells Fargo just introduced a sweepstakes program for customers who move from paper to online monthly statements.
For every personal or business statement selected to move to a paperless option, the customer will receive a sweepstakes entry with a chance to win $25,000 or one of ten $2,500 prizes.
This newest effort is consistent with what is offered by Wells Fargo Advisors, whereby clients have the opportunity to reduce their annual fees by $30/yrs. by opting for online statements.

It's Time to Require Email Addresses as Part of Account Opening Process
I have been in banking long enough to remember the roadblocks that stood in the way of collecting birth dates from customers before the government required this information as part of the customer account file. New account representatives complained that collecting the information was intrusive and impacted the privacy of the customer even though the information was already collected as part of other financial institution transactions (insurance and investments). Once the government required collection of this insight, the barriers came down overnight and marketers were immediately armed with an important tool in modeling households and targeting messages.
While it is doubtful that the government will ever mandate the collection of email addresses, now is the time to add this to the information your bank requires as part of the new account opening process. While some people won't have an email address to provide, this communication option is beneficial for both the customer and the bank.

New Checking Plans Emerge in Response to Reg E
Already experiencing loss of fee income due to lower transactions and lower OD/NSF fees resulting from higher balances, banks are beginning to develop and introduce new checking products that can supplement these lost revenues.
In place of traditional free checking accounts are value-based accounts that allow customers to customize their account for a fee. Features such as identity theft, rewards and even enhanced OD/NSF protection can be selected from a menu of enhancements that allow a bank to replace some of the fee income that already has been lost or will be lost in response to Reg E.
One of the first to build a new array of checking accounts was BBVA Compass which introduced Build to Order Checking more than two years ago.
